today in Yiddish

A call from my nonagenarian aunt today,

to thank us for cheesecake we had ordered as a Hannukah and Christmas gift, taught me a new phrase – in Yiddish – which was my late paternal grandparents’ native tongue. We talked about our kids, about family, and about my wife and I working together. My aunt shared that our happiness was like a Yiddish blessing she recalled, “kina hora“. With the same vitality for life as she possesses, I hope to share this with my grandchildren in 30 years. With family and close friends dropping by this evening, we will count that this blessing powers us through the remainder of 2022, into 2023 and beyond.

Kein Ayin Hora

“there should be no evil eye”, Yiddish
