Twenty four hundred years ago, a Greek poet, Euripedes, shared his observations about life, love, wisdom, and youth. I wonder what he would have thought of my household, but then I have the life experience to learn that not all that much is different in twenty-four centuries.
Leave no stone unturned. Euripedes

A sandwich – that our dog, Comet, helped my son eat last night, inspired these rambling thoughts. For two years this month, Comet has been a member of the family, and for the same two years, we, not Comet, have modified our behavior in two areas. Food, especially sandwiches my youngest adult son buys from time to time, are not left unattended in the living room. Except, it seems when my son comes back to stay with us and forgets. And more often, the kitchen waste can is not left inside the house when we leave for any period of time.

The dog has a compulsion. He is really apologetic about it, but his behavior has not changed in spite of regular meal times, behavior training, and directed, appropriate punishment when he is caught.

Question everything. Learn something. Answer nothing.
My son on the other hand, also has some room to grow into adulthood. We are working on those behaviors as well. I wonder if Euripides can help him?
If we could be twice young and twice old we could correct all our mistakes

For us, anything below the level of the coffee table is considered fair game for the four legged members of our family.

Comet definitely subscribes to that thinking. The dogs don’t help themselves to the dinner table, but my son’s food is especially a target!

Walter’s grazing zone is anywhere less than seven feet off the floor. A couple of days ago he snatched a closed glass canister of cat treats from a shelf barely within my reach…on tip-toes…on a tall day. 😉 I never really thought of Walter as a trash hound until recently. The LOCKED trashcan was emptied all over the kitchen and living room floors. The corner of the trashcan was chewed. The really impressive thing was that the lid was still in the locked position. He popped that thing open like a tube of toothpaste. Sigh…

Sheri and I are having a good commiserating chuckle over that trashcan thing. Do they believe we are testing their abilities, or is it the reverse?
