Dogs care nothing for politics, the Internet, Facebook hacks, nor Elon Musk’s business troubles. They want to know you care about walks, giving them attention, and taking care of the pack. My late mother never really was a “people” person, but if there was a stray dog, a half-blind cat, a lame horse, or a hungry child, she would be a whirlwind of compassion and selfless actions. Like her as well, I am less and less inclined to follow the folly of mankind, particularly the cacophony of shrill emotion, deceit and madness that occur between the rich (if you have, or envision eating today, have food in your refrigerator, and have a solid roof over your head) who squabble about ‘rights’ and political power. There are more than a few billion souls alive today who would like to eat as frequently and as peacefully as the pets in many households in Europe and North America.

Rising up before the dawn, and taking Dexter and Comet out for a long stroll in the cool of the morning, I marvel at the quiet broken by the first songbirds waking. Both dogs nudged me when I rose before the alarm. With a restful night’s sleep behind us, it is time to praise my spiritual Father, and later to serve my congregation – I lead our usher volunteers – worshiping together this morning. It is a good day. To to welcome those seeking relief and some peace from the insanity that worms into every unguarded thought, I am prepared.
