sampai jumpa

A surprise going-away party is an odd time to meet people for the first time in-person. But the potluck tonight to wish those same folks, a married couple, goodbye. One is going across the Pacific and the other is going east, to Texas, to establish a new home for them both. It may sound like the start of a joke: two foreign nationals get married but living together in either’s country of origin is complicated by a pandemic and worse still, government bureaucracy.

Our friends were married just before COVID shuttered government bureaus and halted international travel. Fifteen months in COVID social distancing later, and five months as members of our bible study group, we were gathering as each were preparing to take another journey. Faith, the Bible says, is confidence in what we hope for and certainty in what we do not see (Hebrews 11: 1). Just as the call with a job offer for the husband was an answer to many specific prayers, we are hopeful that the same God will foreshorten the bureaucratic tangle to allow the wife to join her husband soon. Our God promises the prayers of the righteous are powerful and effective.

Indonesian, meaning “till we meet again”
