3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.
2 Corinthians 1: 3 – 5
Troubles. Humanity has quite a lot of them.
Some mistakenly tell others that the LORD of the Universe is punishing us with a disease for ignoring Him. Others observe that everything in the Universe was created by God, from pulsars to amoeba, viruses to Man. They say that this validates that evil (whether virus, or sin) is created by God. But God does not punish us with viral pandemics, hurricanes or earthquakes. These are attributes of the universe that God created. Sin, is a reflection of our imperfection as created beings in following God’s tenets. God has, however, demonstrated both in written Word, history, and present-day example, that those who live by His teaching and model the example of others who live by His teaching, have not been overcome by suffering. As the prophet said, “should we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (Job 2: 10).
Some have said that God who created angels as His messengers created evil because Satan embodies evil in working to separate Man from the Creator. But scripture teaches that God is perfection – Light, Love, Peace, and so on. Imperfection is Darkness, malice, greed, pride, lust – the absence of the qualities that God imbues through the Word, and His Spirit. Whether we are suffering from illness, our circumstances, or as a consequence of another person’s actions, we have freedom to seek God’s Comfort. Why? Jesus Christ is only one to have overcome Death. Those who have received refreshing from God (Acts 3:19), renewal (Romans 12:2) , are called to share this teaching with you. And urge (1 Thessalonians 2: 11 -12) others to seek Him. Whether you believe and follow, however imperfectly, the example of Jesus Christ, or you do not, the God of the Universe believes in you. At a time when men cannot guarantee that we will not get sick and die from a viral pandemic, we all should turn to God’s Word for Comfort. Ask someone to help you understand discipleship. It will benefit this Life. And for an Eternity in the next.
