Memorial Day is not

…for a drunken neighbor to exit a pickup truck driven by a probably drunken driver, after dark tonight, and amble into the path of an oncoming pickup.

But Dexter and Comet did not have to witness an accident tonight.  By the barest of margins, the truck’s driver swerved, screeching tires – but not slowing down – missing the man.   And I was too frozen in morbid curiosity to shout or wave arms from the safety of the corner of my street.

Celebrate the military men and women who have served and died, to give us all the freedom to live another day.   The day honors courage, commitment and sacrifice.  And yes, America we can celebrate responsibly.

But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.  -Galatians 5:13
