The cocks crow at 1AM

Conversing with your neighbors after midnight is not common. Unless you are a rooster on the island of Kauai. Though my spouse often cautions me about using my “inside” voice in the wee morning hours, this is something lost on these fowl.

Any experienced visitor to Kauai knows chickens are endemic here. Escapees decades ago, like the parrots in San Diego County, these birds have made it home and have the run of this island paradise. While they seem to keep insects controlled, like urban pigeons or gulls that hover near humans to pick up any crumb afforded them.

But why they crow in the middle of the night eludes me. Perhaps they are like the 1950s telephone party-line passing gossip across the island? A now protected species, i once suggested to a local that there were a number of wonderful recipes l could share for chicken. He said they weren’t good eating.

I bought ear plugs.
