clean AND dog are not antonyms

It’s Thursday and I haven’t posted a story about Dexter and Comet this week.  So , fashionably late, it seems, the guys want me to tell how clean they have been – for the last two days.

There was only one brief rummaging through the wastebasket in the office to come home to last evening.   And they have managed to maintain the dust and hair shedding to a minimum.   For forty-eight hours. which is a bit novel  For several prior visits to the groomers,  we  went on a hike beforehand – to get as much dust and bits of grass, brambles, and weedy bits in their coat as practical.   And being practical,  the boys go to the groomers as a set, when Comet is looking and smelling a little greasy.   Dexter, of course has that habit as some dogs do,  of needing some nether-region attention every other grooming visit.

But, as many parents might know, you have to dwell on the bright side.    With a member of the “boomerang generation” in the house again, I am grateful that our guest enjoys being clean.  I get the same heart flutter over the dogs, enjoying ever so briefly their bath and clipping.   It is easier these days not to be pent up about little things but it is not a miracle of self-control.   To point out when I start beating a dead horse –  exasperate someone in the home – is why I have a ever-tolerant spouse.

What is even more ironic about this talk on cleanliness,  starting Sunday evening through the following Saturday,  I will be camping with several of my middle-aged buddies.  In Yosemite.  In a tent.  After a few days of camp smoke, dirt, pine needles among the unwashed, I might just pay the $500  for a night in a hotel in the Valley with a warm shower, nice bed and clean sheets.   More likely, I will stand in the unheated public camp bathroom and run chilly water across my hair, face and armpits.

The dogs and polite society I hope to return to will insist on it.

  1. Wow Yosemite how cool. You’d be so close to me if I was home in the states. Sounds like you are looking forward to the tent experience and cold showers hahaha. Have a blast and make some great memories.
